“No, not there it lacks of a proper airport”, so said Charles Lindbergh when excluding Vancouver from his tour of North America, but that was 1927. So what of Vancouver International Airport today?

In brief, Vancouver International is Canada’s second busiest airport, handling over 16 million passengers. It received “The Best Airport in North America” award from Skytax in 2007, 2010 and 2011. Modern stylish shopping, spa facilities in every terminal, good bars and restaurants and the added benefit of an airport authority promoting a positive policy of street pricing.

Aldeasa are the duty free operators here at YVR. Global specialists in the duty free and travel retail business, their innovative approach offers the traveller a wide and comprehensive choice of brands in all 3 terminals.

If you’re travelling to an international destination, or to the US, they operate a pre-order/reserve now service where you can browse and order on-line, then pick up at the airport once you have cleared security. Pick up locations are in both the US Terminal (from “The Shop”) and International Terminal (Pick Up Counter • Gate 52). The site layout is user friendly, with drop down navigation on the left by products eg. Fragrance, Skincare, Wines and Spirits etc • followed by the usual shopping cart/checkout. If you’re going to use this service, register before you start to buy. For those with time on their hands who like to “see and touch” there is a downtown duty free store on Alberni Street, open from 11.00>19.00.

For those who like to browse and shop once in the airport, all 3 terminals are well catered for – but remember, no duty or tax free in the Domestic Terminal.Fashion and accessories get a good showing from French fashion retailer Hermes and Les Boutiques (both located at D53) including some really good lines from Burberry, Bvgari, Salvatore Ferragamo, Hugo Boss and Victoria´s Secret. Fashion and Fun store, also in the International Terminal, is exactly that – great collections from Gucci, Givenchy, Tag Heuer amongst many, covering watches, sunglasses, jewellery and fashion. The choice for skincare, cosmetics and fragrances is in abundance here, but The Beauty Shop (again D53) has the added benefit of beauty advisors to talk you through some new ranges in addition to collections by Lancome, Chanel, Dior and Chanel.“The Shop” (level 3) and The Express Shop (at both D52 and D53) stock a huge selection of tobacco as well as liquor ranging from single malt scotches and whiskeys, brandy and cognacs to Canadian Ice wine • in addition to some great gifts, souvenirs, travel accessories and confectionery.

And no visit to Canada is ever complete without taking part of it home with you. “Thinking Canada” will kit you out in Canucks gear and what they describe as “Vancouver themed clothing”, sell you some brilliant First Nation art pieces, toys and ammolite jewellery • and of course Maple Syrup.
