Hand & Cabin Baggage Rules – Chinese Airlines

Here is our guide to carry-on baggage allowances for the major airlines based in China. Carry-on baggage refers to smaller items passengers are allowed to carry into the cabin of the aircraft. These allowances cover cabin baggage only, and apply to the individual airline. If you are transferring carriers, or transiting through, an airport where a single hand baggage allowance remains please check with the onward airline before you travel.

Whilst the Air China carry-on baggage allowances differ between their domestic/regional and international services, in both cases all luggage must be able to fit either under the seat in front of you or in the overhead lockers and in all cases the maximum dimensions allowed are 55x40x20 cm per bag.

Domestic Flights.
Business Class and Economy Class passengers have an allowance of one small bag, weighing no more than 5 kg. First Class passengers may carry on two small bags and other personal items, each weighing no more than 5 kg.

International or Regional Flights
Economy Class passengers may carry on one small bag or personal item weighing no more than 5 kg. Both First Class and Business Class passengers may carry on two small bags or other personal items, each weighing no more than 8 kg.

Based on your class of travel China Airlines has three types of cabin baggage allowances, but all have a maximum weight limit of 7 kg per bag.
Ecomomy Class. 1 cabin bag, not exceeding 56x36x23 cm.
Business Class. 1 cabin bag, not exceeding 56x36x23 cm, plus Garment/Soft bag not exceeding 20cm after being folded.
First Class. 1 cabin bag, not exceeding 56x36x23 cm, plus one additional bag not exceeding 56x36x23 cm OR a Garment/Soft bag not exceeding 20cm after being folded.

Irrespective of your class of travel, each adult passenger has an allowance of one cabin bag. The dimensions, which must include wheels, handles and any external pockets must be no more than 56x36x23cm.

The weight limit of your cabin bag will differ dependant on your class of travel. Flying Economy Class – 7kg, Business Class – 10 kg and First Class – 15 kg.

Additional cabin baggage allowances for Business and First Class passengers are either 1 x garment bag, that can be no more than 20cm thick when folded OR 1 x “soft bag”, again no more than 20 cm when folded.

Duty Free items are classed as part of your cabin baggage allowance.

Each adult Economy Class passenger has an allowance of one piece of cabin baggage free of charge plus one “accessory”.

Accessories are classed as either a handbag or briefcase or laptop or notebook or camera case. Economy Class allowances must be a maximum of 55x35x25 cm and weigh no more than 12 kg.

Business and First Class passengers are allowed 1 bag (55x35x25cm), plus 1 additional cabin bag of 45x20x35 cm. The maximum weight for both is 18kg. Additional cabin baggage for both Business and First include either a handbag/briefcase/laptop/notebook or camera case.

Hainan Airlines carry-on baggage regulations differ not only by class of ticket but by final geographical destination. The three zones are: Chinese domestic routes, China / USA and Canada routings and thirdly, all other International routes.

Domestic Routes Within China
Economy and Business class ticket holders may take one piece of carry-on baggage. First Class ticket holders may take two carry on bags.

In all cases the dimensions for each bag must not exceed 20x40x55 cm in total, and must wigh no more than 5kg,

International Flights Between China & USA/Canada
Each passenger traveling on Hainan flights between China and USA/Canada is permitted to take one piece of cabin baggage plus 1 “personal article”.

Personal articles are described as handbags, briefcases, notebook computers, cameras, diaper bags and other articles with a total volume not exceeding 38x28x15cm and a maximum weight of 10kg. In all cases The total length, width or height of each piece of carry on baggage must not be more than 115 cm.

All carry-on baggage must fit into the overhead bin or under the seat directly in front of each passenger. Additional allowances permit you to take into the cabin the following: Crutches, one box/bag of duty free items, an overcoat, an umbrella and a reasonable amount of reading material.

Other International Flights
Economy class ticket holders may take one piece of carry-on baggage. The dimensions must not exceed 20x40x55 cm, including wheels, handles and side pockets, with a maximum weight of 5 kg.

First or Business class ticket holders may take two carry-on bags. The dimensions must not exceed 38x28x15 cm, including wheels, handles and side pockets, with a maximum weight of both bags being no more than 10 kg.

The following personal articles are allowed to be carried on board and are not counted in the baggage allowance: an overcoat, umbrella or walking stick, a camera, a reasonable amount of reading material and/or a cosmetic bag.
