Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport • Welcome to Miami ...
Anyone for golf? No? Then let's build an airport on this abandoned 9-hole course. That was 1929. Fast forward past the second world war, when Merle Fogg Airport was renamed the Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale, to current day and you will see Fort Lauderdale • Hollywood International Airport in Broward County, glistening in the Florida sun.
Just a few miles from the central business district of Fort Lauderdale, the airport is about 5 miles from Hollywood (not the one of “Hurray for Hollywood” fame, of course, that one being in California) and 20 miles from Miami.
The airport has recently completed a $700 million expansion that has turned the airport and its environs into an attractive, user-friendly place. Every year, about 22 million passengers pass through, with a decent proportion of those on international flights (it is America's 15th busiest international gateway).
The airport has four terminals, with Terminal 3 (aka Main Terminal) and Terminal 1 (aka New Terminal) the biggest, with two concourses each at either end of these terminals, but every terminal has a range of travel retail shops and news stands, with most concessions beyond security.
For international travellers, the primary duty free stores are located in Terminal 2 on Concourse D • Terminal 3 on Concourses E and F • Terminal 4 on Concourse H where there are tax and duty free savings to be made at one of the four Broward Duty Free stores, located in all terminals except Terminal 1. Here, you can find premium liquors from brands such as Johnny Walker Scotch Whisky, Crown Royal Whisky and Bailey's Irish Cream. And big savings on high street prices on tobacco products, of course. If you are looking to treat yourself or a loved one to some top-end cosmetics, perfume and fragrances, look no further. Luxury brands like Dior, Lancôme, Calvin Klein, Estée Lauder, Dolce & Gabbana and Lacoste are all well represented. Watches from brands such as Fossil and DKNY are also well worth a look. If exquisite sweetness is more to your taste, pick up some Godiva chocolates while you browse.
If you are in the market for clothing, you're at the right airport. The Main Terminal, for example, boasts a Brooks Brothers clothing store, with its classic range of American apparel. But if you want to take a piece Florida's tropical feeling away with you, visit Island Breeze featuring Tommy Bahama. The name says it all: the tropically themed shop promises to provide “a never-ending weekend experience”, and it certainly delivers.
For families with kids, visit one of the KidsWorks stores in the New Terminal or Terminal 2, with their range of branded toys, crafts and travel games. Or for the teenagers and gadget fans out there who are flying from the New Terminal, pop in to Tech on the Go, which carries a wide range of electronic accessories and gadgets from leading makers such as Sony, Phillips, Panasonic, Plantronics, iGo and Skull Candy.
With all the shopping opportunities to be enjoyed at Fort Lauderdale • Hollywood International Airport, it might be better to leave the golf for next time...
